[Story]
I have no idea who wrote that synopsis at jdorama but it’s half-wrong. Makoto (Tomoya Nagase) is not a member of the G-boys. You will realize the importance of this point as you become more engrossed in the Ikebukuro life. If you have seen Kudo Kankuro’s past works, you’ll notice immediately that this is also one of his. If you haven’t noticed, that’s fine. The big problem is not knowing who Kudo Kankuro is. Kudo Kankuro has written the screenplays for Kisarazu Cat’s Eye, Tiger and Dragon, Ping-Pong, 69, and many others than you can check at imdb. I would recommend watching T&G, or Kisarazu for starters and tackle IWGP if you want more. As much as I love Kankuro, his sense of humor would not attract everyone. First, if you are not a native Japanese, the majority of his punchlines are going to be useless because they are related with Japan’s pop culture from the 80s and 70s. I’ve lost half of the jokes from Kisarazu for this reason but then, I was already laughing my ass off even without them. Second, he doesn’t do fairy tale romance. But if you’re looking for a break with said sappy romance, then this is the next best alternative! Third, there’s lots of violence in his dramas, especially in IWGP. They don’t show the actual act of torture so to fill up the viewers’ imagination, they add in gallons of blood. (Fourth) The sexual undertones aren’t so bad because they cut the scene just before it gets rated R. Again, the last two points are at their extreme in IWGP.
[Characters]
Kankuro generally likes to work with a huge cast and with particular actors such as Tomoya Nagase, Okada Junichi, Tsumabuki Satoshi, Kubozuka Yosuke and Sato Ryuta (the blondie). In IWGP, Takashi (Kubozuka Yosuke) had undoubtedly stole the drama from Nagase. Anyone who watches this show will remember his performance as the “King” of IWGP. He speaks funny which is Kubozuka’s overall style based on his other works: SOS, Ping Pong. He walks like a person on drugs but no, he’s not high…as a matter of fact, he forbids the G-boys to be involved with drugs. What makes him scary is his flair for torture. On the other hand, our main character, Makoto, started off weak and a tad dry. The delinquents in IWGP, including the King, regard him very highly. Takashi even called him the toughest guy in IWGP. But for the life of me, I couldn’t see it. If only he injected some Tora and Makio into his role, he would have been more memorable. Despite this, I must say that he improved towards the end of the drama. He successfully reclaimed the light from Yosuke during the climatic scene.
Another notable actor is Ken Watanabe who plays a cop and Makoto’s helper with the cases. Watanabe is internationally known for his roles in The Last Samurai and Memoirs of a Geisha – both movies I haven’t seen. Now I know why he looked familiar! I saw him presenting an award from the last Oscars. Well, with this drama alone, I could tell that he is a veteran actor. There are also several appearances from today’s idols like YamaP as a talented artist, Tsumabuki Satoshi as a Yakuza, and the beautiful Koyuki as a yakuza mistress who falls for our Makoto.
If there’s one actor that made the IWGP viewing slightly annoying, it is Kato Ai. I would gladly exchanged her with Ito Misaki anytime of the day. Kato also stars in this Winter’s drama, Haken no Hinkaku. After seven years and 12 inches more hair, she is still as annoying as ever, if not worse.
[Final Thoughts]
I’ve read too many mystery novels and films that the twist in the ending didn’t really come out as a surprise. The first half of the drama are episodic where Makoto consistently beat the cops into solving cases. He became well-known in the area that he started to attract different sorts of people to ask for his help. The episodic attributes of the drama(as it was partly based on a manga) were minimized by tying in scenarios from the previous episodes into the current one. This is where Kankuro’s talent comes in. He never throws in something or someone without a certain purpose. He’s the kind of man who probably knows how he will end the story before he even writes it.
The cinematography and soundtrack blend perfectly with the Gang life and activities. It doesn’t try to be beautiful; heck, Makoto’s skin problem says it all.
It’s messy, flamboyant, and dark. A graffiti on a wall.
This may not be my favorite of Kankuro’s works, nonetheless, I still liked it. I don’t love it. I looove T&G and Kisarazu Cat’s Eye.

Hello,
Like ur review
I just finish watching this serie.
Soooooo agree with ur review , and about Kato Ai, she’s super annoying for me.
I never feel this way with any Japanese actress before , I dont like her acting , the way she acts and the way she say a word <—so so annoying.Ok enough now hahaha.
Thank you for sharing ur review.I love to read it
haha…umm I kinda liked kato ai in this drama. this is my first time seeing a drama with her in it though. I agree that she’s kinda annoying in the drama, meaning that if I had a girlfriend like that in real life I would probably be a little annoyed too. But I think that’s just how that character’s portrayed in the story, so it’s not really her fault… Plus I kinda have sympathy for Hikaru (Kato Ai’s character in the drama), with her childhood trauma and other things going on around her. Afterall, all she wanted to do was to be with Makoto. Bleh, I wish they had a better ending for makoto and hikaru, like with a scene showing them being happy and together and such.
Yeah i noticed about the same actors in Kudo Kankuro’s works. But that’s good, because Nagase Tomoya (especially), Okada Junichi, Kubozuka Yosuke etc complement his genius scripts tremendously. I don’t mind if they’re in every Kudo Kankuro’s works! XD I wonder if he’s good friends with them. I found a similarity between all of them. They’re both loud and havoc in all of his works.
King is my favourite character too! My friend’s as well. Yeah i must admit that its his trademark and that’s one of the reason why i love and enjoy watching him (if the plot is good though).
Have you watched Yaji-san Kita-san: The Midnight Pilgrims? Those who’ve seen most of Kudo’s works will notice the familiar faces who’s in the film. There’s Nagase Tomoya for once XD, Makoto’s mother from IWGP, Ozzy from Kisarazu’s Cat’s Eyes, Arata from Ping Pong, the annoying policeman from IWGP, Tsumabuki Satoshi, the guy who went to Tokyo with his mum from IWGP etc etc.. And yes Yaji-san Kita-san film directed by Kudo himself is a brilliant piece of work. It’s Kudo Kankuro’s work so ridiculously epic comedy is expected. Those who are not familiar or doesn’t like Kudo’s works might not like the film. It’s very very different from the usual film (well unless you’ve watched Zebraman..) It’s a dark comedy, which some might find it hard to decipher.
I watched IWGP somewhere in 2006 and it gave a big impact on me. The fact that i’ve been watching Go, Ping Pong, 69 before IWGP without realising that it was written by the same writer bemused me. After watching IWGP and realised that Kudo Kankuro was the writer, i started digging more of his stuffs.
Yeah Kato Ai in IWGP is super annoying, beyond words… I actually want Koyuki to end up with Makoto. So yeah when i first started watching Haken no Hinkaku and saw Kato Ai, i was like “What the? This girl again… -___-”. I’m glad i did finish the series anyway because that’s another brilliant series that managed to crack me up again.
Sorry i wrote too much. I just want to let everyone know how great Kudo Kankuro is. I’m gonna watch “Welcome To The Quiet Room” film now. Kudo was an actor in this, as well as Tsumabuki Satoshi.
Nothing to apologize for! It’s not very often I find another Kankuro fan and I really enjoyed reading your input on his works. I haven’t seen Yaji-san Kita-san but now that you’ve mentioned it, I’ll go and download it. As for Welcome to the quiet room, I’m still in the middle of deciding whether to watch it or not. I know, eh! Tsumabuki should be enough motivation for me to see it. heh heh heh
I forgot to add that another factor why i enjoy Kudo’s works very much is the BL elements in there. I mean not literally but it’s there. Not exactly a BL but more like boys’ friendship i suppose?
For example, Toraji and Ryuji (T&D), Bussan and the Kisarazu Cats, Kubozuka Yosuke and Arata (Ping Pong), Makoto and King (IWGP), Tsumabuki Satoshi and Ando Masanobu (69)..
I think i watched T&D in 2006 and it’s only today that i watched the SP. I didn’t even know there was an SP for T&D or more like i think i knew about it but it wasn’t subbed yet at that time (2006) so i kinda had forgotten about it completely.. It’s quite strange because usually SP is after a series has ended. The T&D SP must have been so great (it IS great) that there was a demand for the series! After watching the T&D SP, i find myself wanting to have T&D 2!!!!!!! Dammit i miss Okada Junichi (i need to start watching SP drama ASAP!)!
As for “Welcome to the Quiet Room”, i only ended up watching the first cd and didn’t bother to watch the 2nd one. How many times do i need to remind myself that Kudo is an actor and not the screenwriter for this film! D: And Satoshi wasn’t even in the first CD so i got kinda bored. I don’t like it when a female is playing the lead character… I got bored easily you know.. hahaha
But Yaji-san and Kita-san is a must watch film
well for a Kudo Kankuro’s fan, you have to at least witness his genius works and witty script. The whole time i was watching it, i kept pondering how in the world he could come up with something like this….
