I don’t get it. I don’t really get why more Japanese are watching Gokusen 3 than ROOKIES, CHANGE, Last friends, Osen, etc. I won’t even watch it for Nakayama Yukie. The likes of Gokusen are the reason why most d-addicts have a low opinion of school dramas. That’s why when a good one actually comes our way, we don’t even give it a try for the fear of meeting another Seito Shokun and Gachi Baka. Who’s not sick of another teacher claiming to make his students’ dream come true? Kawato Koichi (Sato Ryuta) is no different. He drove the nail all the way through with talks of dreams and sparkling tomorrows. Who wouldn’t groan and gag? I would have done both while watching Yankumi. But Sato Ryuta makes it work. With his past works of always acting the stupid sidekick, he unknowingly gained Kawato Koichi’s loveable and naive nature who will easily take anyone’s word as truth.
Sad to say, ROOKIES is not free from the very cliche scenes that pops out every now and then in teacher-student dramas. (E.g. When he stayed overnight to weed the entire baseball field reminds of Yankumi and a certain river or is that Uchiyama Rina? ) But ROOKIES is also a drama about baseball. Likewise, it also suffers from those cliche situations such as rebel members not wanting to be in the group. Hopefully, it will veer away from the Waterboys route and have the team together by the next episode.
Speaking of the delinquents, correct me if I’m wrong, but we are Johnny-free this time. And thank God for that. Ichihara Hayato plays Aniya Keiichi. This boy:
If you look intently on his face, you’ll see such delicate features but if you look at him from afar, there’s an obvious alpha aura on him. You just know he’s in charge. I want to put my thumbs on his forehead and smooth out his eyebrows. His perfectly-plucked eyebrows kinda give him a permanent frown. I love love love watching his character in this drama. He has more depth than any of the gang leaders in the school dramas I have watched.
I love how the first episode was done, albeit a bit too long. Okay, it was really long. But at least they didn’t have a one student/per episode set-up. The background scores are most memorable in the first episode and yes, GReeeeN – kiseki is my favorite theme song this season.
Listen to GreeeeN – Kiseki: (Download MP3 Here)
As for the rest of the team, it takes 3-4 episodes to get familiar with them. So at first sight, they might be greasy-looking and their weird hair-dos are the only way you can tell them apart, but trust me, they will get to ya. They will. I love ROOKIES!!!

Aww. I love school dramas
I loved Gokusen, but only the first one. I don’t see the point of making 80394903 seasons of Gokusen T_T I’ve seen the PV of GReeeeN – kiseki and I liked it ^_^
This looks interesting. ^^,
ROOKIES is great and Gokusen is getting so repetitive it’s just the same as season 1 & 2.
I really fell in love with this drama. I`m not very into japanese Dramas, I just started a while ago and I`ve already seen boring and bad things. But this here is really a good one. Very easy to watch. And Ichihara is acting great. The group is fantastic and the teacher is so funny. Love that
ohhh! i see you like aniya, too harhar! that guy, he’s adorable, and i agree with all the things you said! and wakana is surprising, seeing that he can be serious (as one can witness in taiyou no kisetsu) and dorky and crude (as seen here in rookies). and yeah, i only watched gokusen two because teppei is there (shibatora is good, funny heehee, should try it). what is the point of a gokusen with no uchiyama and sawada?! but CHANGE is great! finished it in one day! yay! and i can’t believe gokusen 3 got a higher rating than kimutaku! oh well, kimutaku is still great considering that change is monday, and gokusen 3 is saturday. . . sorry for ranting but great review! c”,)
I’ve just finished watching this. Found it quite interesting as I am a very big fan of baseball. I’m just wondering, is there any suggestions anyone here might have on more jdramas such as this? (Baseball/sports, comedy/school/delinquents)
the cast of the movie was on TV show Moonlight Orchestra for a PR event

Hi jaycee05,
BTW, before I start, how have you been? CASB okay? Life’s treating you good? I really hope so
Back to Rookies, I’ve only started watching this – late (i know) but better late than never. My only regret is ~ not catching on this earlier.
I’m not done with it yet, but what I can say now is that I got hooked to it as early as episode 1. I enjoyed the fact that it took 1hr 30mins for the pilot episode…hehe…don’t care if it was slow. I’m just glad that Sato Ryuta does a good job as Kawato Koichi. Liking this sensei a lot despite the expected cliched motivation coming from a sensei to his delinquent students. But like you said, he made it work
And about Ichihara Hayato – is it just me or do you find his raspy voice smexy?? Like there’s a scratch and rough edge to it that makes me wanna hear more of it. Just adds more to his kewlness and alpha aura as you put it *giggles*. Hearing more of his voice in Saru Lock as well
Will finish this soon, thought of doing a marathon but it’s the weekdays ~ wudn’t wanna end-up being a zombie for work 2morow.
Take care friend!
LOL…you just gave me an epiphany redge. It’s the VOICE that had me writing my first and hopefully last fan girl post.
CASB is never okay..sigh…I can’t wait to go back to my normal otaku life…
Enjoy work tomorrow!
