JMOVIE: Koizora (Sky of Love)

I almost did not watch this movie after reading a review from a disappointed viewer labeling it as a cheesefest…but nothing can stop me after watching the trailer. Because of the bad review, I moved it behind my watch list and decided to watch Aragaki Yui’s other movie, Koi suru Madori. Unlike Koizora, Koisuru Madori got a perfect ten from said reviewer and named it a “flawless film.” This flawless film had me sleeping in no time. I guess I’m the kind who seldom fall for subtlety. Even the ending is a smart-ass blow with my naive illusions on fiction and romance. It’s like saying: Your serendipity is the destiny of another. How crushing is that?

Well, Koizora was the crack that had revived my fantasies. I don’t care if you call me just another fangirl, but I guess this is my weakness. The story of punk and smooth-talking bad boy (sometimes with bleached hair and pierced ears) falling head over heels in love with the sweet and quiet girl is the basic recipe for a Korean internet novel (official and amateur works). My favorite writer of these kind of novels is Guiyeoni who created A Wolf’s Attraction/Temptation of the Wolves, Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do and He was Cool. Two All of them were made into a movie, as you might know.

I kinda categorize Koizora as one of these types. It was a novel published in mobile phones and made 11 million people (probably mostly Japanese high school girls) cry. It’s hard not to spoil the plot if I write what made these people cry. But then again, now that I say it’s a tearjerker, there’s only one way for a teen love story to go and be a tearjerker. In other words…yup, that’s it. You got it.

But don’t back off now. It’s the kind of movie that when you reach the sad parts, you want to rewind and start from the beginning because you either want to go back to the happy parts, or you don’t want to reach the inevitable. It’s the kind of storyline you’ve scoffed off but when you’re right there watching it, you’re still getting the tingles and you’re still sniffing noisily.

Aragaki Yui is climbing pretty fast in my “most charming J-actress” list. With a voice so soft and a smile so radiant, I could hardly imagine her acting evil characters. That’s probably why she’s so unconvincing in Dragon Zakura. Haruma Miura, on the other hand, satisfied my checklist for the fanfic bad boy. I especially love the way he’s so devoted to Mika. Gosh, I knew I’ve seen him somewhere. I never thought, though, he was the 15-yr old boy from 14 Sai no Haha.

Don’t expect Koizora to be one of those “perfect” artsy Japanese films. It’s not. It’s claimed to be written by the real-life Mika. So, how could it be? I highly doubt all of the content is based on her real life experiences. It’s not even very original. If I were one of those Japanese girls to receive this novel in my cellphone, I would have nonchalantly labeled it as a spam chain letter. The ending is extremely predictable. Maybe it’s because I haven’t watched a lot of Korean stuff lately, so I’ve sobbed harder than I needed to. Plus, it is very reminiscent to one my guilty pleasure-teen Hollywood movies: (highlight to read) A Walk To Remember (highlight to read). There are some eyebrow-raising scenes that’ll probably anger and baffle a few viewers, but if you don’t let it bother you too much then you still might enjoy the movie. The enjoyment factor is definitely lower if you are male. Don’t ask why girls love such illogical and foolish love stories, we just do.

PS: Koizora will be made into a Japanese drama this coming Summer.

Oh frack, indeed it is! I thought it was just a rumor. Thanks!
Yes, Haruma Miura with bleached hair is way too cool.

I think this can be a really cheesy movie but at the same time realistic. Hiro and Mika felt so strongly about each other at such a young age in a short span of time, which ultimately distorted their decision-making skills. I mean, in the library?! In 1st year highschool?! Quitting school to raise a baby and everything’s a-ok?! I think it depicted young love quite well. Young (but not so innocent), foolish and naive love.

The saddest part in this movie for me was when she said it’ll be the last time she thinks of Hiro or something like that, then Heavenly Days starts playing.

LOL. In the library!!??? That was bothering me for a while now. I haven’t seen a single soul in the library when they were doing it. WTF!!! HAHA

    maaku_sutipen:
About the father’s ideal son/daughter…I could understand Kotaro Koizumi and Sakurai Sho because of their involvement in politics or something…but hell, Koike Teppei??? Mocomichi???

I just read the Koizora drama news a few days ago, and saw the actors’ pictures today. I guess they have to keep Hiro’s hair eh. I’m reserving my comment on this one until I see them on screen.

I watched it based on your recommendation, and I’d have to say that it was really cute and moving at the same time. Although the acting isn’t as powerful when compared to Korean movies (damn Koreans and their perfect sorrowful atmosphere), it’s still touching.

Ah, I really liked Haruma Miura’s character. I mean, he’s not really the bad-boy type, it’s just that he looks like it. I guess you could say that he’s just stylish, especially since I’ve only seen him get into a fight once (his ex’s friends who did you know what to the main girl). Aww, his mole makes me appreciate the mole that my boyfriend has. ;x He’s sooo cute.

But man, this movie moved pretty fast. I’m not talking about time-wise, but more on their actions. They met like.. three times before what happened in his room. o__O” The library scene was kinda cute. *shifty* ;]

I remember watching Koizora, just like a month or weeks ago, I didn’t sob at the end cause i fast forwarded some places, but i loved it anyways. You are right that it wasn’t really original but i guess the originality came from the hardwork of the author, that what makes it mostly sad~
btw you should watch closed note~ hardsub has been released on lj. I am dwl it now i guess that it is pretty good~

    Just watched this movie recently.
Haruma and Aragaki looks really nice together in this film. We really enjoyed it. Though there are some unnecessary scenes, I think it served its purpose to entertain us.
I saw Haruma in ‘Binbo Danshi’ and he was a bit feminine there with his black hair, the silver hair really suits him.

Is the second love of Mika, the same guy who plays timpani in ‘Nodame Cantabile’?

Oh hey, the first episode of the drama adaptation of Koizora aired today.

    There’s a raw version out atm ;o

I watched the drama version after watching this movie like, twice before, and I have to say I sorta like the drama a bit more already. Or at least, I’m ready to. The first episode was good, albeit fast, but it has potential. I feel bad for the drama actors, though, cause they’re getting trashed for just not being Miura/Yui. o.o

Nice review! I was thinking about seeing this soon, and this was probably what I needed to finally do it!

I watched this movie after reading your entry. It really was a cheesefest but I LOVE IT!!!

Made me want to have a boyfriend who is devoted like Hiro but not so stupid to let himself suffer alone.

‘just watched this movie today after reading your review. i’m glad i watched it and not deterred by other people’s bashing and bad review of this movie.

have you watched “Tennen Kokekko” by any chance? It’s a very good coming of age drama. check it out and let me know what you think of it. i totally love that movie, it’s based off Fusako Kuramchi’s best selling novel.

I know this is old… but I cannot for I don’t know reason finish this movie! I always stop on the scene when they were like having pre marital sex for the first time!!! It creeps the hell out of me…
Well this is Japan afterall.. and this movie is quite truthful at its presentation that kids are sexually active at around junior high… But still!…
well the real good thing about this movie is the cinematography.
